{Cupcake Basics} Cupcake Liners

I love pretty cupcake liners!  Whenever I post cupcakes in pretty colored liners like I did for my Vanilla Cupcakes or my daughter's Ladybug Birthday I get lots of questions about where I buy my liners.  Most of the questions have to do with why the liners I use keep their color so well, and yet most of the liners you may try lose their color/pattern when you bake in them.  There is no "secret technique" that I'm using, just better liners.  Most cute printed liners found in craft stores lose their color/pattern when they are baked in.  The colored liners I (most often) use are labeled either "greaseproof" or "glassine".  Those are the terms you want to look for if you want to bake in colored liners, and have them keep (most of) their color.  Vanilla cupcakes, or light colored batters will keep the liners the most vibrant, but good quality liners should keep most of their color even with chocolate batter.  Another option if you want to use up colored liners you have (that are not greaseproof), is to bake the cupcakes in white liners, then set the cupcakes (with the white liners) in the colored/patterned liners before serving.

These are a few of my favorite sources for beautiful cupcake liners (again, look for "greaseproof" or "glassine" if you want them to hold their color).

Simply Caked (great for brown or white liners in bulk)

I like to store some of my pretty liners in glass jars, for easy access and a colorful display.

Happy Baking!

  2. Thank you for posting this as I have been wondering about this. I have purchased several cute liners from hobby lobby and the cute design is not even visible after baking. From one cupcake lover to another I appreciate the recommendations.

  7. Thanks for the post...I always wondered how to keep the colour of my cupcakes cases...I am now on the hunt for greaseproof or glassine ones over here in Australia.
I think I might have to check out if those websites you listed will deliver to this side of the world.

  11. I absolutely love my brown baking cups from Simply Caked, they are great for chocolate cupcakes.
There is another problem I have with some cupcake liners: sometimes liners come loose from the baked cupcake. It has happened to me a few times using greaseproof Culpitt Printed baking cases (could be a coincidence though... They do keep their color/pattern which is great). Do you have any idea why this happens? Hope you or anyone else can help me with this. Thank you!

  15. I to would Like to know about the liners coming off after baking, it is happing a lot lately, & I haven't changed anything in my baking, times, or when
I pull them out of tin to cool, I do this right after they come out so there is no condensation from the heat
making them pull loose. There is
A group of us on FB wondering this, so I'm on the hunt for a answer. That's how I found your blog.
Love your liners & the blog!!

  16. Love the idea of storing them in glass containers ;) Whenever I use the "greaseproof" liners they peel away from my cupcakes. Any suggestions?

  22. Thanks for the links to purchase the better liners! It's so diappointing to have cute liners only to have the design "disappear" after you bake the cupcakes. I have some displayed in a big jar too, but not as neatly:)

  26. Thanks for your tips. I am so sick of buying pretty liners just to have them look like nothing after they are baked. I am obviously buying the wrong type. I am amazed that you can still see that bright blue liner with a chocolate cupcake in it!!

  27. Do you know where the pink liners with the pastel rainbow came from? They would be PERFECT for a baby shower I am doing and I checked all three sites but didn't see them. THANKS!

  28. I love the orange and white stripe one :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Tina Marie- I believe the pink ones with the stripes are from the Wilton company. They are not greaseproof, but could be used as a decorative wrapper. Try Wilton.com

  30. Hi. From one baker to the other I have found by trial and error that baking in two wrappers that have not been separated keeps the color and its original tight shape. I love the wrappers in the glass jars. What a cute idea. :)

  34. This is off topic, but the decoration you have on top of the purple and blue cupcakes would be super cute for my daughter's birthday. How do you make those?

  35. Re: Cupcake liners pulling away- I've only had this happen a time or two, and I have no real awswer as to why it happens! It's only happened to me with cupcakes left overnight, in a tupperware or something similar, I think some liners don't handle the moisture well. Sorry I can't be of much help on this one!

  36. I've noticed that some of your liners, from past posts, seem to be those very stiff (almost like nut cups) and I'm wondering if that's what they were. If so, did you have to spray them for release? Thanks for any help.

  37. April 23, 2012

    Friends and customers,

After much deliberation and thought, Simply Caked is closing our
    doors, effective May 1, 2012.

Anu and Marcella have decided to pursue other business directions
independently. While saddened by this decision, we are also excited
about the new directions and opportunities ahead of us - and doing
    what truly brings us happiness.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have done business with all of
you. Rest assured, up until April 30, 2012, it will be business as
usual; all orders will be fulfilled by Simply Caked.

Thank you for your loyalty and patronage over the last 3 years.

    Happy Baking!

  38. I don't know where you are located, but Sweet recently opened a store in Lawrence, KS (I think they have one in Topeka, too) and if you ever have a chance to visit, do it! It's a great shop and the ladies are so kind.

  40. Thank you! I have been struggling with liners for awhile, and I never thought to bake them in plain white liners and add on the colored ones after baking. Thanks for the tip!
